History
The Home & Building Association of Greater Grand Rapids (HBAGGR) is a professional trade non-profit organization. It was chartered by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) on October 31, 1945 by 18 builders as the Grand Rapids Home Builders Association. In 1985, the name was changed to Greater Grand Rapids Home Builders Association. In 2001 the name was changed to it's current heading of Home & Building Association of Greater Grand Rapids.
According to Harold Albert (who was President of the HBAGGR in 1950), “We organized the Association because we realized that we would accomplish more by working together. We realized that every business has to be organized to look after their interests. We wanted to further the standard of the profession so that the good builders would be members of the association and bad builders would not.”
Today, the HBAGGR has nearly 500 company members. Roughly one third of these are contractors who hold a builder's license with the State of Michigan, and the remaining companies are suppliers who provide products and services to the building industry.
Within NAHB, the HBAGGR ranks just over 100th by size out of 850 state and local associations around the country. Within the Michigan Association of Home Builders (MAHB), the HBAGGR ranks 2nd in size out of 35 local associations in Michigan.
In 1987, the Association moved to 2021 44th Street, S.E., and in 2005 moved to 1633 East Beltline Ave., N.E. in Grand Rapids. The newest location as of April 2009 is now at the Glenwood Corporate Centre at 3196 Kraft Ave. SE, Suite 300, Grand Rapids, MI 49512.
Other groups within the Association include the Remodelors™ Council, the HBA Foundation and a local chapter of Green Built Michigan™ . The Foundation and Green Built are both separate charitable non-profit organizations run out of the HBAGGR. There are also nearly 15 committees concentrating on many housing-related activities, social and networking activities, Business After Hour programs and many education programs.
Many events, activities and educational programs are conducted by the Association, but probably the most recognizable are the Parades of Homes(SM) held in the Spring and Fall and the Home Show held in the Spring.
Staff includes three full time and three part-time people under the leadership of Dale Shugars, who is the Executive Vice President/CEO, a position he is new to as of July of 2009. A 15 member Board of Directors makes policy decisions for the Association.
Although nearly all of the founders of the HBAGGR have passed on now, the high standards and the spirit of cooperation they instilled in the home building industry are continued today – 65 years and many thousands of homes later.
